Watch John discussing his experiences here.

John McCarthy was captured in Lebanon in April 1986 by Islamic Jihad, while working as a journalist.  He became Britain’s longest-held hostage in Lebanon, spending over five years in captivity until his release in August 1991.  After his release he wrote the best-selling Some Other Rainbow (Corgi, 2017) with Jill Morell, who had campaigned tirelessly for his release.  This paved the way for a highly successful career as an author and broadcaster.

What the audience can expect
In 2004, John returned to Beirut, in what was a personal and emotional journey for him, to make Out of The Shadows for ITV, documenting his quest to understand the Shia Muslims and confront the ghosts of his past.  John has worked for the BBC as co-presenter with Sandi Toksvig of the television series Island Race and subsequently as a presenter for the World Service.  He is a regular guest presenter on Radio 4’s Excess Baggage.

Presenting Approach
As a successful broadcaster, John conveys his experience with great warmth and humility.  He presents with clarity, wisdom and, ultimately, great optimism.  He shares stories from his life both past and present, and his courage and ability.

John presents in English.

Inspirational, Motivational, Compelling.
